God Save the King - Toledo '77 concert matrix mix

Though generally a notch below his high-octane performance in Ann Arbor the following night, Elvis' appearance at the University of Toledo Centennial Hall on April 23, 1977 reveals that the commitment shown in the proceeding show was certainly no fluke.

The extant audio sources from the Ohio show are a step below from Michigan; the slow-running audience recording exhibiting quite a harsh 'in your face' sound with little in the way of dynamics; similarly, the incomplete soundboard displays a mushy hollowness not helped by being a hissy nth generation tape copy.

However, with some considerable time and effort, the whole unveiled itself to be greater than the sum of its parts.

And here, affording the audience track a degree of pseudo-stereo ambience via an excellent custom FX preset proved to be particularly beneficial when layering the restored mono soundboard on top.

The upgraded audience track [to which your ears will become quickly accustomed to] of course fills in the gaps that the soundboard missed [and vice versa in a couple of spots]; plus, there were several cuts in the recording that had to be patched, in order to maintain a consistent and seamless listening experience.

I'll be honest, it's not a show I've often visited since hearing the Baxter soundboard back in the 90's.

But that's the good thing with matrices, they can elevate and help you rediscover shows you may have mistakenly wrote off as being mediocre/poor.

They certainly give a more accurate representation of the actual concert performance/experience.

I was particularly pleased with how much ambience, 'width' and relative clarity I was able to extract from the audience track.

As mentioned previously, without a decent-sounding, ambient secondary source, you're fighting a losing battle when attempting to craft a listenable AUD/SBD matrix.

Lay back, enjoy the show."
