During the Midnight Show on August 25, 1969, at the big, freaky International Hotel, Elvis Presley took the stage, delivering one of the strongest performances of his historic return to live work. Captured on multitrack tape, the concert has long been regarded as one of the finest recordings from the engagement. Seven performances from this very show were selected by RCA for Elvis in Person at the International Hotel, giving the night an important place in the story of Elvis's return to the stage.

For Hot August Night “Justified and Stripped”, the same source material is approached from a different perspective. The orchestral backing has been removed, shifting the focus toward Elvis and the musicians at the heart of the performance.

The music is only part of what gives this particular show its character. Elvis was clearly at ease on the International Hotel stage, interacting freely with the audience and acknowledging friends throughout the evening. Nancy Sinatra, Mac Davis, Buddy Hackett, Tom Jones, and Shelley Fabares were among those he greeted, adding an informal quality to a performance that otherwise demonstrated remarkable control and confidence.

Heard in this stripped-back form, the concert takes on a more direct character. It is the sound of an artist fully embracing his return to live performance, with the confidence, spontaneity, and sheer musical force that made the 1969 engagement such a defining moment in his career.
