On March 25, 1961, Elvis Presley took the stage at Bloch Arena in Honolulu for a performance unlike any other in his career. Conceived as a benefit for the USS Arizona Memorial Fund, the concert brought together music, purpose, and history at a pivotal moment in Elvis’ life.
The significance of the evening would become even greater with time. This would be the last time Elvis Presley performed on a stage until his 1968 Comeback Special. Soon afterward, his career would turn increasingly toward Hollywood, with recording sessions and film work replacing the live performances that had defined his rise to fame.
Musically, the concert captures Elvis at a fascinating point in his evolution. The set moves between the rock and roll material that established his reputation and the newer songs that reflected his changing direction. "Heartbreak Hotel," "All Shook Up," "Don’t Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog" sit alongside "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "It’s Now or Never," revealing an artist already moving beyond the sound of the 1950s.
The concert also achieved its larger purpose, raising substantial funds toward the completion of the memorial, which would be dedicated the following year. For this SRB Records release, the March 25, 1961 performance has been newly restored and presented in stereo, bringing greater clarity, depth, and presence to the surviving recording.
